What is behind the siding matters more than the siding

The siding itself is the part a homeowner sees and picks a color for, but it is not what decides how long the job lasts. When the old course comes off, what a crew finds underneath is sheathing that has either held up or gone soft, house wrap that has either done its job or given up years ago, and a soffit that was either ventilated properly when the house was built or never was at all. Any of the three, wrong, will shorten the life of whatever new siding goes on over it.
That is why the old course comes off in full before anything gets quoted as finished. Patching new siding over sheathing that is already compromised just buries the same problem for a few more years, and a house that was never properly vented at the soffit will keep trapping moisture behind the wall no matter how good the new siding looks from the street.

Choosing the profile
Cedar shingle, clapboard, dutch lap and vinyl each throw a different shadow line, and that reveal, the depth of the horizontal line between one course and the next, changes how a whole elevation reads more than the color does. A dutch lap has a sharper, more defined shadow than a standard lap; cedar shingle reads as texture rather than a line at all; a wide clapboard reveal makes a house look older and more substantial, a narrower one reads cleaner and more contemporary.
Most of what we install day to day is vinyl from CertainTeed, Mastic and Variform, because it holds up well across a full Pennsylvania year and comes in enough profiles to match either direction. Cedar shingle and true clapboard both come up on older houses in Ambler, Jenkintown and the surrounding boroughs where matching what is already on the street matters as much as durability.
Chapter 03
Trim, capping and the corners
A siding job is not actually judged by the field, it is judged at the corners. The corner board is the piece that either lines up clean and tight against both walls or announces itself as a shortcut from ten feet away, and it is one of the first things a neighbor's eye goes to whether they know why or not. Matching or contrasting trim around windows and doors gets quoted as part of the job rather than as an accessory tacked on afterward, because trim done as an afterthought is exactly what makes a siding job look unfinished even when the field itself is perfect.
Window capping gets the same attention. Wrapped properly, it stops being something that needs repainting every few years, and it is one more place where a corner cut early shows up as a maintenance call two winters later.
Seamless gutters, guards and cleaning
Seamless gutters are formed to the actual length of your run rather than pieced together from stock sections, which means fewer joints and fewer places for a gutter to eventually leak. Sizing the run correctly for the roof area it is draining matters more on an older Montgomery County house than most people expect, since an undersized gutter overflows in exactly the storm you actually needed it to work.
Gutter work and roof work belong on the same visit whenever the schedule allows it, and not as a matter of convenience alone. The eaves are already open and staged once a roof crew is up there, so adding guards or a gutter replacement at that point costs less than calling a separate crew back for a job that would otherwise mean opening the same eave twice. Gutter guard installation goes on at the same time, to keep leaves and debris out of the run.

This is the moment that actually matters
This is a real job, mid tear off: the old siding stripped back to insulation board, the sheathing underneath finally visible. Everything a homeowner will judge later, how straight the corners are, how long the new siding lasts through a Pennsylvania winter, gets decided right here, before a single new panel goes up.
