Matching the window to the opening

A double hung window still covers most openings in Montgomery and Bucks County, and for good reason: it is the easiest style to clean from inside and it holds up to decades of use without the hardware giving out. Casement and awning windows crank open instead of sliding, so they seal tighter against a driving rain and they are the better call on a wall that catches weather straight on.
Bay and bow windows change what a room feels like more than any other single replacement, because they push the glass out past the wall line and pull in light from three angles instead of one. Sliders and the odd specialty shape, an arch over a stairwell or an octagon in a gable, come up less often but get built to the actual opening rather than forced into a stock size.

What energy efficient actually means on a quote
Every window on the market gets called energy efficient now, which makes the word close to meaningless on its own. What actually changes the bill is the glass package, the frame material, and one thing nobody puts on the sticker: how tight the install is around the rough opening. A great window set into a gapped, poorly sealed opening performs like a mediocre one.
We install Simonton and Pella lines because both build a glass package and frame that hold up in a Pennsylvania winter, but the install detail, shimming it plumb, sealing and insulating the gap, flashing the sill, is what actually decides whether any of that performs once the window has been in the wall for five years.
Chapter 03
Doors as an exterior system
A front door takes more daily abuse than almost anything else on the house: sun on one face, weather on the other, a lock and hinge working every single day. Therma Tru entry doors hold up to that better than most, and we hang them plumb and weathered properly, not just screwed into whatever opening is already there.
Patio and sliding glass doors get the same attention to the track and the threshold, since that is where a door either glides for twenty years or starts sticking after two winters. Storm doors and French doors round out the rest: a storm door for the added weather barrier on an exposed entry, French doors where a wider opening actually earns its keep.
Capping is the finish that lasts
Wood trim looks good the day it is painted and bad the day after the next storm. Capping wraps the wood, the eaves, the window trim, the door trim and the garage door trim, in aluminum or vinyl coil stock formed to the exact profile underneath, so the wood is sealed away from the weather instead of exposed to it.
Done right, capping is the difference between a trim job you repaint every few years and one you stop thinking about. It is also the detail most easily done badly, loose corners, gaps at the joints, so it gets the same care as the window or door it is finishing, not treated as an afterthought once the bigger job is done.

Ardsley Bible Chapel is a good example of what capping is actually for. The red door and the white trim you see on the finished building still look sharp years after the crew wrapped them, because the wood underneath was sealed away from the weather rather than left for the next coat of paint to hide it.
